THE FERAL FIVE - PART 2 (plus one)

Sunday, May 31, 2004
There I was, out by the pool on a lovely Sunday afternoon, when I spotted a set of eyes peeking at me from the flower bed. I went to take a closer look, and four kittens streaked from behind the plants and headed behind the house toward our potting shed. In complete disbelief, and having serious de ja vu, I went and got Larry. We could not find them, but figured they went inside the shed.

Sure enough, as twilight came, there was mommy and kittens, perched on top of the wall above the flower bed. It took us some time to devise a plan and have the time to catch them, but on Monday, June 14th, I trapped three of them in the shed right after work. Larry devised a cage of Jen's design, and I went in and moved around pots in the shed as he held the cage and drywall over the door and caught them as they fled. The following evening, we caught the fourth kitten in a cat friendly trap. The next night, mommy followed suit and was reunited with her little brood.

The Feral Five, Part 2

Jen took custody of three kittens on July 4th (and has them listed on Petfinder through Family Additions). Doc and Wyatt are socializing nicely, are very sweet and ready for a loving home! A friend at Larry's work adopted mommy Beltane after she was fixed July 9th, and she went to her new home on July 13th. We kept Salem, she is still quite wild, and not remotely placeable (but she and Luna are best buddies). Gypsy did not socialize after every effort, and I picked her up from Jen on July 17th, bringing her back to Salem and Luna. As of August, the kittens have been introduced to the rest of the feline family and are socializing well!

Amber called, and had taken a kitten away from a group of kids who were throwing it around below her apartment balcony. They had picked it up when the neighbors decided they didn't want her and threw her OUT (Amber confirmed this with the adults, did I ever mention how much I hate humans?). Being kids, they didn't think to see if she needed food or water, or understand about NICE play. Amber, not knowing what to do with her, and unable to keep her due to her own felines... was told her to bring her over. After all, we already had one bathroom set up with kittens! She quickly bonded with the other kittens and I think she was instrumental in bringing them around. As Larry and I have completely fallen in love with her and she is so tiny, we are going to keep her as well (insanity prevails!) :-)
