WHAT THE INDOOR CAT MISSES
by Nicole Gilbert

What the Indoor Cat Is Deprived Of:
According to The Humane Society of the United States, cats that are allowed to roam freely outdoors may live for only two to five years, whereas cats that are protected from the dangers of the outdoors often live past the age of 17. Indoor cats miss out on a lot of things. Fortunately, most of the things they lack are things you don't want anyway!

  • Exposure to Feline Leukemia (FeLV)
  • Exposure to FIV (feline AIDS)
  • Exposure to Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP)
  • Exposure to Upper Respiratory Infections (URI)
  • Fleas, ticks and other parasites
  • Fights with feral cats, dogs or wild animals
  • Worms
  • Being attacked by dogs
  • Getting lost
  • Being tortured by icky people
  • Being hit by a car
  • A shorter life span
  • Being stolen for profit
(such as being sold to labs who do animal testing and experiments)
  • Being eaten by a coyote
  • Skin cancer and sun damage
  • Poisoning by food, pesticides, antifreeze or other toxic substances
  • Becoming trapped in a shed or garage and unable to come home
  • Involuntary relocation by jumping into a car or moving van
If you are strongly opposed to keeping your cat indoors all the time, there are safer ways to let them outside. One is to put your cat in a harness attached to a clothesline, which is then attached to a large, stationary object so they can't get out of your backyard. The disadvantage to this is that you have to keep an eye on the cat so he/she neither slips out of the harness and gets loose nor gets tangled in the line and strangles.

Another option is to purchase an outdoor cat enclosure, such as the one seen here: Purr-Secure
