MEDITATIVE MIND
Meditation is extremely powerful with enormous physical and spiritual benefits. Researchers and doctors worldwide are discovering its healing power. Meditation assists greatly with stress and anxiety. The awareness it brings can bring personal insight and self-understanding. Meditation exercises are forms of imagery and visualization. They can heal old traumas, confront anxieties, give closure, teach forgiveness, and enhance self-esteem. To meditate is to focus mentally on one thought, idea, or concept. Meditation is a tool with which you may manipulate thought in an organized manner. Meditation is mental housekeeping. Meditation enhances the capacity to pay attention, increasing both concentration and empathy. This enables meditators to pay closer attention to what is actually going on in the rest of their lives. This attention training is what sets meditation apart from other forms of relaxation training. Meditation is one of the best methods for attaining mental calm and clarity. That tranquil and quiet mental state that allows you to better understand and cope with your thoughts, emotions and actions.

ANIMAL GUIDE MEDITATION
There are many ways to discover your animal totem or totems. A special meditation journey, or meditation with the specific intent of meeting one of your animal guides, works best. Meeting each individually will give you the most out of each meditation. Animal guides reside on the astral levels, ask for their guidance and they will give you support. Start with a basic meditation, then go into your journey.

Visualize a chord of light energy flowing down from your spine deep into the Earth. Feel the warm energy of the Earth flowing through you, feel the power strengthen you. Allow the darkness to envelop you. Out of this darkness you see a white light shining ahead. Visualize yourself walking to the light. As you get closer, you are aware of a doorway, a door to another realm. Open the door, look out and see the lush greenery. Step through the door and out onto the ground, taking in all the surroundings. See the details of the trees, shrubs, grasses and flowers. Walk around looking at everything that surrounds you. You see a pathway, step onto the path and beginning walking slowly. Walk for a while, and then pause. Listen carefully and wait. Be patient. You may see one of your animal guides approaching. Take as much time as needed. When you see this animal, speak with it. Ask questions or just say hello at this point. Make this first meeting brief. You are establishing a relationship. When your meeting is finished, bid the animal farewell and thank them. Walk slowly back down the path to the doorway. Visualize yourself walking back through, stepping back into the darkness. Return often!

DOORWAY MEDITATION
A technique used to access the information encoded in symbols. Things you are drawn to, messages from your subconscious, etc. There are many uses for this technique. Your name, a choice, an image that haunts you, a number, an herb, a God or Goddess, something from a dream or scrying. There are two types of symbols: Universal Symbols and Personal Symbols. Universal symbols key into the same information for everyone. Personal symbols key into information especially for you. Sometimes Universal Symbols can also be Personal Symbols, so working with them can yield very different results.

Start with a basic meditation. Then visualize a door. Breathe it into existence, imagine every detail until you can visualize the door clearly before you. Now see the symbol you want to work with clearly on the door. You may ask guides for assistance before you open the door. When the symbol is very clear in your mind, open the door. The more emotionally charged a symbol is, the harder it may be get the door open. Pay close attention to the information you receive once open. You may see visions, hear voices, be met by someone, remember something, or you may visualize yet another symbol. It may take many sessions to finish with one symbol. When you are done with a session, mentally close the door behind you.

ELEMENTAL MEDITATION
A wonderful way to attune yourself with, and discover the mysteries of, the sacred elements: Earth, Fire, Water and Air. Start with a basic meditation. Then meditate on each element in turn, or on one particular element, depending on your needs.

HEARTBEAT MEDITATION
Start with a basic meditation. Concentrate on feeling your heart beat. Feel it beat and pulse within your body. Concentrate on each distinctive beat. Feel your pulse in other areas of your body (arms, legs, hands, feet, etc.) This may take a few sessions of practice, be patient. When you have achieved this, try decreasing the time it takes to feel the beat. Try feeling the beat in varying circumstances; walking, working, talking. You should be able to reach the point where you can feel the beat as soon as you think of it in any situation without interrupting other activities. This exercise aids in focus and concentration, and teaches you to use your inner power more effectively. The pulse of your heartbeat is the flow of your life force!
"We are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world."
~ Dhammapada, or Sayings of the Buddha

Webster's Dictionary
defines meditation as:

"The act of meditating; closed or continued thought; the revolving of a subject in the mind"

There Are Two Main Types Of Meditation:

1. Concentration
2. Mindfulness

Concentration Meditation practices involve focusing attention on a single object. Objects of meditation can include the breath, an inner or external image, a movement pattern (as in tai chi or yoga), or a sound, word, or phrase that is repeated silently (mantra). The purpose of concentrative practices is to learn to focus one's attention or develop concentration.

Mindfulness Meditation practices involve becoming aware of the entire field of attention. The meditator is aware of all thoughts, feelings, perceptions or sensations as they arise in each moment.

Many meditation practices, such as the Japanese Buddhist practice "zazen" are a blend of these two forms.

START SIMPLE

Use a space that is private and safe, where you will not be interrupted.

You should not be overly tired or have just eaten as both may cause drowsiness. Even though you want to achieve an altered state of consciousness, you do wish to remain conscious to some degree.

Use stones, light candles, annoint with essential oil, burn incense, and have a comfortable place to sit or lay down. Unplug the phone or turn off the ringer.

Some people find music can greatly enhance states of meditation. The music should be quiet and rhythmic and bring feelings of peace and contentment.

A candle flame can be used as a focal point for enhancing levels of focus and concentration.

Close your eyes and take in a deep cleansing breath. Fill your lungs to their fullest capacity.

Then release the breath through your mouth and push all the air from your body out.

As you exhale, imagine all stress, anxiety and negativity leaving your body and being carried out to the universe where it dissipates and can no longer do harm. Allow the darkness to envelop and soothe you.

Repeat until you relax your entire body and mind.

Try meditating for 5 minutes, holding no thought, and build up your time slowly.

When you have mastered this, start to meditate and hold one thought for the duration.

As you advance, you can experiment with some of the more challenging techniques.
